Report: New DVD Release of “Shoah” to Contain Hour-Long Bloopers Reel

SAAS-FEE, SWITZERLAND — A new DVD release of Claude Lanzmann’s heartrending nine-and-a-half-hour Holocaust documentary Shoah will include an extended gag reel among its special features, the French director announced from his office at the European Graduate School on Thursday. “When you’re dealing with that much raw footage, you’re bound to get some real gut-busters,” Lanzmann stated — “even despite the rather somber nature of the film, which, of course, concerns the gruesome and systematic murder of some six million Jewish people.”

While Lanzmann was reluctant to provide specific details about the sort of bloopers to be found on the new DVD, he did hint at footage of Simon Srebnik — one of only two known survivors of the Chelmo extermination camp — footage of Srebnik accidentally tripping as he led Lanzmann’s crew to the exact spot where he was shot execution-style and lay bleeding for two days before Soviet troops arrived and liberated the camp. “I almost needed oxygen, I laughed so hard,” Lanzmann said, chuckling even as he recalled the episode.
