On Concision in Writing

“Never say in X words what you can say in Y.” This is a familiar commandment repeated by experienced writers for the benefit of less experienced ones. What the former group neglects to mention, however — perhaps because it would undermine the existence of their own work — is that Y ought almost always to equal 0.
