On the Misfortune of Life

With regard to most kinds of misfortune, it’s better to have endured them in the past than to be enduring them currently.

This is a difficulty with the misfortune of life: it’s ideal neither to be enduring nor have endured it — nor, for that matter, to be about to endure it.
